The College Receives Pennsylvania Liquor Control Board Bureau of Alcohol Education Reducing Underage Drinking and Dangerous Drinking Grant

(Delaware & Chester Counties, PA • September 16, 2020)—Delaware County Community College has received a two-year grant totaling $35,387 from the Pennsylvania Liquor Control Board as part of its Reducing Underage Drinking and Dangerous Drinking Grant.

Funding from the grant, which will run through June 30, 2022, will enable the College to provide a variety of activities and speakers focused on alcohol awareness for student athletes, as well as to provide a virtual reality program on impaired driving, offered during the College’s annual Health and Wellness Fair.

The College also will create professional development sessions for employers that will assist them in providing resources and support to their employees, so that the employers can better identify the signs of alcohol abuse among their employees and help them obtain help, if needed, when alcohol abuse is identified.

Additionally, a new professional development program for faculty in the College’s Skilled Trades and Advanced Technology programs will provide assistance, so that faculty can learn to spot the signs of intoxication among students being taught how to operate equipment that can be dangerous if not used properly.

Students in the College’s Paralegal Studies program also will receive training enabling them to volunteer in the College’s Family Advocacy Clinic to provide assistance and referrals to supportive services that can help young people in the truancy court system or youth facing alcohol-related charges.

Since its inception of the grants program in 1999, the Pennsylvania Liquor Control Board (PLCB) has awarded more than $17 million in alcohol education grants to reduce underage and dangerous drinking. The PLCB sponsors initiatives that include grants totaling approximately $1 million annually, distribution of educational materials, training for resident assistants on college campuses, and partnership building with communities and organizations across Pennsylvania committed to the prevention of alcohol misuse and underage drinking.
